2,000 residents of the area surrounding Harrisburg, Pennsylvania filed lawsuits claiming that exposure to radiation from Three Mile Islands Nuclear Disaster caused health problems including leukemia and other cancers. The plants owners and workers acknowledged that radiation released exceeding federal limits, but the radiation that reached residential areas never exceeded those limits. A Harrisburg federal judge as well as the Third US Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the lawsuits to go forward provided proof of injuries caused by radiation released by Three Mile Island can be produced.
