RESEARCH AND ARCHIVAL OPPORTUNITIES AT THE KENNEDY LIBRARY The Kennedy Library Foundation, a private non-profit educational organization, administers and funds a number of programs on behalf of the public John F. Kennedy Library, a presidential library under the National Archives and Records Administration. Scholars and students are invited to apply for support of their research and use of the archival, manuscript, and audiovisual holdings of the Library under the following programs. Only one grant or fellowship application per person can be submitted in a given year. A brief description of each grant follows, more detailed information is provided on the following pages. 1.1 Marjorie Kovler Fellowship. One per year. Stipend of $3,500. Preference is given in this fellowship to research in the area of foreign intelligence and the presidency or a related topic. Application deadline: February 15. Award announced: April 20. 1.2 Abba Schwartz Fellowship. One per year. Stipend of $3,500. Preference is given in this fellowship to research on immigration, naturalization, or refugee policy. Application deadline: February 15. Award announced: May 1. 1.3 Theodore C. Sorensen Fellowship. One per year. Stipend of $5,000. Preference is given in this fellowship to research on domestic policy, political journalism, polling, or press relations. Application deadline: February 15. Award announced: May 10. 1.4 Kennedy Research Grants. Several (15-20) per year. Range from $500 to $1,500. These can be on any topic relating to the Kennedy period or requiring use of the holdings. Preference is given to Ph.D. dissertation research, research in recently opened or relatively unused collections and the preparation of recent dissertations for publication, but all proposals are welcome. Application deadlines: February 15 for spring grants, August 15 for fall grants. Awards announced: April 15 and October 15. 1.5 Hemingway Research Grants. Several (5-10) per year. Range from $200 to $1,000. These are awarded to scholars requiring the use of the Hemingway Collection. Preference is given to dissertation research by Ph.D. candidates and research in recently opened or relatively unused portions of the collection, but all proposals are welcome. Application deadlines: February 15 for spring grants, August 15 for fall grants. Awards announced: April 20 and October 20. Beginning in 1994, Hemingway Research grants will be awarded in the spring only. 1.6 Archival Internships. Each year, the textual and audiovisual branches of the archives at the Kennedy Library offer a number of paid internships to students interested in working in the archival, manuscript, audiovisual, research library, or public history fields. Most interns are undergraduates in history, political science, English, journalism or communications. A few are graduate students. Some have previous archives or library experience. Mr. Schwartz served in the Kennedy Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Security and Consular Affairs. The Schwartz Fellowship carries a stipend of $3,500. These were subjects of particular personal and professional interest to Mr. Schwartz. Grant applications are evaluated on the basis of expected utilization of available holdings of the Library, the degree to which they address research needs in Kennedy period studies, and the qualifications of applicants. Preference is given to dissertation research by Ph.D. candidates in newly opened or relatively unused collections and the work of recent Ph.D.s who are revising their dissertations for publication, but all proposals are welcome and will receive careful consideration. HEMINGWAY RESEARCH GRANTS The Kennedy Library Foundation provides funds for the award of grants in aid of research in the Hemingway Collection. Grants are in the range of $200.00 to $1,000.00. KENNEDY LIBRARY The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library, under a grant from the Kennedy Library Foundation, awards several archival internships each year to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in history, government, archival administration, library science, English, journalism, communications and other related disciplines. Interns in the Library's Textual Archives participate in a variety of projects under the direction of professional archivists. Projects include clerical, preservation, processing, and reference work with the papers of President Kennedy, his administration, his associates and contemporaries and the papers of Ernest Hemingway. Students gain career-relevant archival experience in a Presidential Library while contributing to the work of the institution. The Audiovisual Archives offers students an exposure to the expanding field of audiovisual technology, with its state of the art video editing suite, film cold storage vault, photo lab , and audio and video duplicating facilities. Supervised projects include assistance to researchers, audio and video tape logging and duplication, still photo and film cataloging and arrangement, production assistance, and some clerical duties. To be considered for summer internships, applications should be submitted by March 15 for immediate review and notification of selection by April 1. A limited number of additional internships may open up during fall, winter, and spring as funds and positions become available. Applications for these positions will be accepted at any time. Summer applicants also may indicate interest in internships at other times throughout the year, and their applications will be carried forward in our active files. The Library requires that interns make a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week. Interns are paid at the rate of $7.00 per hour. The Library will also consider proposals for unpaid internships, independent study projects, work-study employment, and internships undertaken for academic credit.
